For many immigrants, health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare or the Marketplace, has made it possible to obtain quality health insurance at an affordable monthly cost through government premium tax credits (essentially, government discounts that lower the monthly premium).
Beginning in 2027, however, significant changes are expected to affect who qualifies for these premium discounts.
Will You Lose Your Obamacare Discount in 2027?
If you are not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder), these changes may affect your ability to receive discounted Marketplace health insurance beginning in 2027.
Rather than waiting until Open Enrollment, I encourage you to begin planning now.
Our office has identified a trusted health insurance resource for our clients. Joshua Villanueva of Gateway Medical helps immigrant families understand their health insurance options based on their immigration status and personal circumstances.
Joshua offers a FREE one-hour consultation by video, telephone, or in person at their Oakland Park office. There is no cost or obligation for this consultation.

Now let’s look at what is changing and how it may affect you.
What Is Changing?
Under current law, beginning January 1, 2027, eligibility for Marketplace premium tax credits will become much more limited.
For most people, this means that U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) will continue to qualify for Marketplace premium discounts if they otherwise meet the income requirements.
There are a few limited exceptions under laws such as the Cuban Adjustment Act and the Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act (HRIFA), but for the vast majority of immigrants, these exceptions will not apply.
As a result, many immigrants who currently receive Marketplace discounts because of their immigration status may no longer qualify beginning in 2027.
This is especially important for individuals who have been relying on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or other temporary forms of lawful presence. If TPS is not reinstated or another qualifying immigration status is obtained before 2027, many of these individuals could lose eligibility for Marketplace premium discounts.
What About My Current 2026 Health Insurance?
As of the date this article is being written, individuals who are currently enrolled in a 2026 Marketplace health insurance plan should continue to have coverage through the remainder of the 2026 plan year, even if they lose the immigration status that originally made them eligible during the year.
Of course, immigration and health insurance laws can change, so it is important to continue monitoring future developments.
Does This Mean I Cannot Buy Health Insurance?
No.
One of the biggest misunderstandings is that people think they will no longer be able to purchase health insurance.
That is not necessarily the case.
Many individuals will still be able to purchase Marketplace health insurance plans. The difference is that they may have to pay the full monthly premium without receiving the government discount that currently makes the coverage affordable.
Depending on your circumstances, there may also be other private health insurance options available.
What Should You Do?
If these changes affect you, now is the time to begin planning—not when Open Enrollment arrives.
Everyone’s situation is different, and the best option depends on your immigration status, your health needs, your family situation, and your budget.
In some cases, individuals who have valid employment authorization (an Employment Authorization Document or EAD) and/or an SSN may have access to additional health insurance options or more competitive pricing than someone without those documents.
Even if you no longer qualify for Marketplace premium discounts, there are still several options that may be available.
1. Continue with a Marketplace (Obamacare) Plan
Some people will still be able to purchase a Marketplace health insurance plan. The difference is that they may have to pay the full monthly premium without receiving the government discount.
For individuals with ongoing medical conditions or families who want comprehensive health insurance that includes doctor visits, hospital care, surgeries, prescriptions, and preventive care, this may still be the best option despite the higher monthly cost.
2. Explore Private Health Insurance
Depending on your age, health, immigration status, and medical needs, there may be private health insurance plans available outside of the Marketplace. Some may offer lower monthly premiums than paying full price for a Marketplace plan, although benefits, provider networks, and coverage can vary significantly.
3. Employer or Business Health Insurance
If you lawfully work for an employer that offers health insurance, or if you own a business that qualifies for a small-group health insurance plan, these options may provide more affordable coverage than purchasing insurance on your own.
Every employer plan is different, so it is worth exploring whether this option is available to you or your family.
Don’t Wait Until Open Enrollment !!
Perhaps the most important step you can take is speaking with someone who understands both the Affordable Care Act and the unique insurance issues affecting immigrant families.
A licensed insurance professional can review your immigration status, employment authorization, I-94 status, household income, medical needs, and budget to determine which options may be available to you. They can also compare Marketplace plans, private insurance, and employer-sponsored coverage so you can make an informed decision.
The most important thing is not to wait until the last minute. Starting early gives you time to compare plans, understand your costs, and avoid any unexpected gaps in health insurance coverage.
Don’t Wait Until Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment for 2027 health insurance will begin in late 2026.
If you believe these changes may affect you or your family, I recommend beginning the conversation well before Open Enrollment begins. Waiting until the last minute could limit your options and create unnecessary stress.
